Airway and Breathing Treatments in Centennial and Parker

How Orthodontics Can Help Enhancing Health and Well-being Through Proper Airway Development

When the jaws and teeth don't develop optimally, it can sometimes restrict the airway, particularly in the nasal passages and the back of the throat. This can lead to various breathing difficulties, most notably during sleep. Chronic mouth breathing, snoring, and even sleep apnea can be signs that the airway is compromised. As orthodontists, we are uniquely positioned to identify structural issues within the mouth and jaw that may be contributing to these airway problems. Addressing these issues early can lead to profound improvements in quality of life.

When to Consider Orthodontic Airway and Breathing Treatments

Here are common signs of potential airway and breathing issues to look for:

Chronic mouth breathing: Especially during the day and night.

Snoring: Loud or consistent snoring, even in children.

Restless sleep: Tossing and turning, unusual sleeping positions.

Morning headaches: Or feeling tired even after a full night's sleep.

Difficulty concentrating: Or behavioral issues (in children).

Dark circles under the eyes: Often referred to as "allergic shiners."

Gagging or choking: During sleep.

Frequent ear infections or sinus issues.

Narrow or underdeveloped dental arches and jaws.

If you or your child exhibit any of these symptoms, it's important to consider an orthodontic evaluation. During your visit, Dr. Hoggan will not only assess your teeth and bite but also pay close attention to the development of the jaws, palate, and surrounding structures that impact the airway. Our comprehensive examination includes looking for signs of constricted airways and discussing the implications of poor breathing patterns. We often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as ENTs (Ear, Nose, and Throat specialists) or sleep physicians, to ensure a holistic approach to your care.

Orthodontic treatment can significantly improve airway function by addressing underlying structural issues. By expanding the dental arches and guiding jaw development, we can create more space for the tongue and improve airflow. Here's how orthodontic solutions can help with airway and breathing issues:

Palatal Expanders: These appliances gently widen the upper jaw, creating more space in the nasal passages and allowing for better nasal breathing. This is especially effective in growing children.

Jaw Alignment: Correcting misaligned jaws (e.g., a recessed lower jaw) can improve the position of the tongue and open up the airway in the back of the throat.

Orthognathic Surgery (in severe adult cases): For some adults with significant skeletal discrepancies impacting the airway, a collaborative approach with an oral surgeon may be recommended to reposition the jaws.

Guided Growth Appliances: For children, certain appliances can encourage proper forward development of the jaws, which can help support a more open airway.
